As per UGC rules, a Ph.D. degree pursued in regular mode is only valid. That being said, IGNOU, which has been offering courses in regular mode, is currently offering Ph.D. courses in regular mode.
So first, clear your mind; if you are choosing IGNOU, then get ready to do your course in New Delhi in regular mode. You need to go to the IGNOU’s headquarters building to attend classes. And most importantly, the regional centers or study centers don’t come into the picture.
If you are planning to enroll yourself in IGNOU for the Ph.D. program, then,
You must have done your post-graduation in the relevant Discipline.
You must have secured at least 55% in your post-graduation.
Note: There is a relaxation of 5% marks provided for reserved candidates.
You must have either completed M.Phil along with course work or must have cleared NET or any equivalent exam to be exempt from appearing in the IGNOU entrance exam, you may also use help books to get high grades on these exams.
Selection Criteria
There are two stages for the selection criteria.
Students have to clear stage 1(entrance test) and stage 2(interview/presentation).
Stage 1 - Entrance test
The National Test Agency will conduct the entrance test at the national level across the country. The entrance test will be held in 13 cities. You can get some idea about the entrance test from IGNOU's previous question paper
Stage 2 - Interview/Presentation
The candidates who get shortlisted in the entrance exam will be called for an interview or presentation before the Discipline-specific Doctoral Research Committee.
Only the selected candidates will receive the offer letters.
How to Apply for a Ph.D. in IGNOU?
Follow the step-by-step guide to applying for the IGNOU Ph.D. course
Visit the official site of IGNOU to register and apply for a Ph.D. course.
Once you visit the homepage of IGNOU, click on the Online Admission 2021 link.
You will be directed to a new page. Now select the "Click here for New Registration."
A new page will open where you will need to fill up all the required details(both personal and academic details)
Once you fill in all the details, you need to upload the scanned images of your passport pic and signature.
Note: The image size should not exceed 50KB.
On successful uploading of the images, you need to proceed to pay the application fee.
Note: You can pay the application fee online via Net/banking or using a credit/debit card.
Once the payment is made, you will receive a confirmation mail or an SMS stating that the payment is made.
When all these formalities are completed, you must print out the confirmation page for future use.
Application Fee
You need to apply online, and the application fee is non-refundable.
General/OBC have to pay Rs.1000/-
SC/ST?EWS reserved category have to pay Rs.800/-
Admit Card
Once your application is confirmed, you will get your admit card. So, you need to log in with your enrollment number on the university's website, and you can download your admit card.
