IGNOU’s Post Graduate Diploma in Translation (PGDT) offers students a comprehensive understanding of translation techniques and practices. The program prepares you to grab diverse career opportunities in fields such as media, publishing, and international relations. The program teaches you translation from English to Hindi and vice-versa. It helps you develop translation skills and train you as a translator. One of the important aspects of this program is the Project Work (MTTP-006) which you have to do to complete the diploma. If you are struggling to prepare the IGNOU MTTP-006 Project, then do not worry. This blog will give you a detailed overview of the IGNOU PGDT project guidelines.
You have to complete this project work in various stages. Mainly the project work is divided into three stages. The project includes preparing a project proposal and sending it for approval, after approval you can start translating the selected text. The selected text should be between 8,000 to 10,000 words. And in the last stage you have to write translation notes in around 1500 words. Below we have discussed each stage one by one.
In the first stage you have to prepare a project proposal. Project proposal outlines a plan for a specific translation work you are willing to do. To begin with the project work you need to first select a relevant topic. In FAQs below, we have given some subject areas, from which you can select a topic. Also, note that you can select only Indian and foreign books, research articles or notable literature written in standard level Hindi or English. Before selecting the text and sending the proposal, ensure that the material you have selected has not been translated earlier. You must attach a declaration with your signature along with the project proposal that the material you have selected has not been translated earlier. You have to do the project work completely by yourself, you should not take help from anyone to translate. In short, you don’t need a guide to complete the project.
Your project proposal must contain the following details:
Once your project proposal is ready send it to:
The Programme Coordinator,
PGDT Programme
School of Translation Studies and Training
Block 45-C, Indira Gandhi National Open University
Maidan Garhi, New Delhi-40068.
You will be communicated with the updates whether your proposal is approved or not. If you get approval on it, you can move ahead with translating the text. The cover page of the project proposal should contain the required information (such as your name, course code, enrollment number, name and code of the study center; and name and code of the regional center) given in Annexure "A" of the project manual in bold letters so that it is easy to send the information to you. Do not forget to mention your phone number, mobile number and email.
Once you get approval on your project proposal or selected text, you can start translating it. Consider the following points to prepare your project.
This project requires you to (a) translate the accepted material; and (b) write a "Translator's Note". After completing these two tasks, you must submit them for evaluation.
You have to read the given materials carefully; this will help you understand the topic better. After this, locate the difficult words and idioms in the content and note them separately in the paper. Now you should look at the dictionary and find their meaning. At the end of the project, list all the words with their meaning. Also, take care of abbreviations, you shouldn't assume anything instead find authentic meaning and sources.
As you know, translators use different techniques to translate. You have to mention separately the words that you find difficult to understand and also write how you used them in the translation work. Such as whether you adopted/borrowed, adapted, replaced or deleted. Also, if a word was not available, state whether you used a word-for-word translation or paraphrase technique. Also, indicate if your translated work includes the translator's comments or supplements. Not only this, if you have failed to find the meaning of any word in the dictionary and you have coined a new word for it, then do mention it in the project.
After translating a page, you should make sure that your translation is going in the right direction, it matches the meaning of the source material, and the language is consistent and understandable. If everything looks okay, continue translating. Once you have completed the translation, recheck it and correct any discrepancies if you find them.
This is the final stage of the project. You have to write 1500 words translation notes. In this note, you’ll explain your experience while doing this translation work and what challenges and difficulties you have faced throughout it. Mention the following points in the translation notes:
When you've finished translation work, check everything and correct any discrepancies. You must submit the translation project in typed format only, however handwritten project can also be submitted but this is for those who want to do English to Hindi translation.
Phase III: Submission of IGNOU MTTP-006 Project
On the front page/cover page of your translation project, you must mention the Course Subject, Programme Code, Enrolment Number, Name, Address, Study Centre Code, Signature, and Date. Apart from this, you will also have to attach a Certificate stating that this is your original work and that you have not taken any help from anyone to complete it. Like other IGNOU projects, you don't need any guide for the project, you have to do it yourself.
When everything is in order and the project looks fine and in line with the PGDT project guidelines, you should send it directly to:
