Established in 1985, IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is a distance-learning national Open university located in New Delhi, India. Nearly 20% of Indian students registered in higher education are enrolled with IGNOU. The university provides a multi-nodal learning system through print, video, teleconferencing, internet-based learning, face-to-face sessions, ICTs and practical.
The school of foreign language (SOFL) is among 21 schools of studies at IGNOU established in 2007. It has the aim to offer a cost-effective and flexible foreign language program for learners. It offers programs based on the specific needs of learners. The main objective of the school of studies is to promote communication across borders and countries.
The demand for learning a foreign language is increasing day by day. The school works in collaboration with foreign universities to develop human resources for several sectors like technology, humanities, social sciences, and commerce. Globalization has to boost the demand mainly. It adds-on special expertise in the professional career of a human being.
The program aims to introduce French to beginners and gradually build skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking and to develop the intercultural competence of the learners.
The Program is based on the textbook Connexons, Method de François, Regine Meraux, Yue's Loise au. Didier, 2001 based on the Common European Framework of Reference for languages formulated by the Council of Europe for all European Languages.
The book ‘Connexions’ is being supplemented with wrap up materials by IGNOU in the form of a user manual with a study guide, added exercises, glossary, and phonetics as additional material to help the learner.
The significant feature is that study materials have been prepared for the learners in both French-Hindi for Hindi phones and French English for Anglophones. The learners thereby have the choice of taking either of the two mediums.
