Those learners who opt for the MECP-101 project work, are required to submit the project to the university. We are here to help you prepare an informative and eye-catching project report and familiarize yourself with its various aspects. It is important to mention here that the Project Guide has three parts—the first part gives the basic information about the project work, the second part talks about the stages of the Project Work and the third part comprises annexure to be used at several stages of the Project Report.
While writing your project report, you should take into consideration that clarity and originality happen to be its two crucial components. Therefore, you should make sure that your report does not have any sort of plagiarism or ambiguity. If your project is found to contain plagiarized content, it will get rejected. Anti-plagiarism software runs over every project and once it is ascertained that it is 100% unique, then and only then it is sent for further study. The examiners will go through your project report and test your skills of communicating your ideas and your analytical abilities.
There are certain things that you must keep into consideration while preparing a project report:
(i) the theoretical perspective and the logic of inquiry
(ii) techniques of the collection of data
(iii) tools or methods of analyzing the data
(a) Cover Page: The first page of your report happens to be the cover page. Your cover page should find mention the title of the project, your name, address, and year as well as your enrolment number.
(b) Second and Third Page: The second page should contain the contents of your project whereas the third page of your project should contain the list of tables, maps, and figures/illustrations.
(c) Fourth Page: Reserve this page for writing acknowledgments.
(d) Fifth Page: This page of your project should contain a list of abbreviations alphabetically.
(e) Sixth page onwards: From the 6th page onwards, you should write about the first introduction to your project, its approach, etc. These pages should also contain the rationale for the selection of the project theme, the objectives, the research methodology, etc. In addition to these, these pages should also carry the description of techniques or methods adopted for data collection and analysis, limitations of the study, and the like. Importantly, all these constitute the first chapter of the project report.
(f) The main body of the project will start from the second chapter.
(g) The last chapter of the project is reserved for mentioning the findings drawn from the project work and suggestions, if applicable.
The following is the checklist of IGNOU MECP 101 Synopsis Proposal:
i) The title of the proposed project
ii) A brief overview of the problem(s) to be studied
iii) Objectives of the proposed study
iv) The research questions to be addressed
v) The type of data/information to be put into use
vi) The research methodology
vii) The anticipated conclusion.
You should choose the topic of your project work that you have good reasons to believe that it convincingly explains the economic theory and the statistical approaches. Let us understand this principle through an example.
Those of you, who have lived in a village, might have seen a large number of employees migrating from that(rural) area to big towns/metropolitan cities. There might be some questions in your mind regarding this migration, such as:
You can add on the topic as per your interests. Your topic may come from industry, agriculture, money and capital markets, developmental economics, labor and employment, education, and skill development. You can write down your inquiries and finalize the subject of your project based on your area of interest. Once you decide on the topic of your project, you will have to make it the main theme of your study. Before finalizing the topic, you must make sure that you are familiar with the geographic location on which your topic is based. It is prudent to choose a location, that is quite convenient for you to commute.
Importantly, the title of your project should be as specific as possible. To facilitate the completion of the project in a very short period, your research area should be local in scope.
You must also classify the problem in the discussion. You should first express the problem comprehensively and then break it down in operational terms.
Do hold frequent discussions with your Guide, peer group, seniors and all those who you consider can help prepare a good project report. Also, go through the project report of your seniors so that you can be able to get a thumbnail impression of a project report which in turn will help you prepare a better report.
You must also consider the availability of data and familiarity with the associated literature, at the time of project identification.
You must prepare your IGNOU MECP 101 Project with due consultation with your Guide. However, the below-given techniques will help you create an impactful MECP Project:
1) The Title of the Project: The title of your project should be such that anybody can understand the nature and scope of the undertaking. It should be precise and free from any kind of ambiguity. In addition to these, you should also ensure that its relevance to your field of employment is unquestionable.
2) Goals: Bear in mind that the objectives of your project study must correspond to the criteria of your research inquiries. Your objective statement must govern the data or information to be collected and the used analytical methodologies. Your project should not have more than two to three objectives. Apart from these, you must state your objectives clearly.
3) Research concerns: Your research questions should elucidate the identified issue. Your inquiries should be in the form of ‘if, what, why, how, and the likes.’ The question 'why' assumes great importance if you are among those learners who want to comprehend the determinants of an issue and are looking for an explanation in terms of cause and effect relationship. You can start your inquiry with the word 'how.' However, your proposal should not have more than two to three questions.
4) Formulated hypotheses if any: It is important to mention here that your hypothesis need not be stated clearly in the project proposal itself. A hypothesis happens to be the provisional explanation for the relationship between two or more variables in terms of cause and effect. In exploratory or descriptive research, hypothesis formation should not find mentioned. However, if you create a hypothesis, you will have to ensure that it is compatible with the questions of your research.
5) Methodology of Research: This section of your project report should describe the "how" part of your study was conducted. Just to begin with, you must be able to define the variables for which you will like to have data/information, to carry out your study as per your objectives and research questions.
The last step in this process is to specify the source of your data/information. The websites of different data collection organizations, such as NSSO, the Registrar of Census, the various Directories of Statistics, the Planning Division, etc. come under the secondary sources of data. In case, your data requirements are not fulfilled through secondary sources, you may collect data with the help of a sample survey using a questionnaire or another data-collecting method.
You should try to limit your sample size to not more than 100 observations(units) for the collection of data because of your time constraints and the scope of your research study. Also, mention the specific technique(s) that will be used for analyzing the data/information obtained for conducting the research.
Simply put, your project proposal should ideally contain the following:
6) Anticipated Outcomes: Explain the anticipated outcome of your study after your research proposal.
You should complete your project report under the supervision of a Guide, approved by the Faculty of Economics, IGNOU, New Delhi. If the name of a supervisor is not approved by the faculty, you will be needed to give the name of another suitable person to become your Guide.
Your supervisor will:

In case a student does not become able to revise the proposal to the extent of the satisfaction of the faculty even after getting two chances, he will be provided another optional course to complete
