IGNOU MLIP-08 Project – Status of Library Automation and Networked Services in Mumbai

Information, as the saying goes, is power. The primary objective of libraries is to organize,and provide access to information.This objective will never change, although the format and the methods that are used can change dramatically, providing new opportunities and challenges.It is the Information Technology (i.e., IT) by/through which the nature of libraries can change dramatically. The unprecedented advances in information technology comprising computers, telecommunication, micrographics and reprographics have indisputably caused the information revolution of today. Engineering Colleges are established for the technological development of the country and their libraries are the most important components of it.

Objectives

• To find out the present status of computerization in Private Engineering College (PEC) Libraries of Mumbai;
• To identify the software packages being used;
• To find out the library functions and services been or being automated;
• To identify the automated and networked services being provided; and
• To suggest suitable ways and means of library automation & networked services to improve the situation.
