IGNOU MMPP-01 (OM) Project – Oil & Gas Maintenance Management: A Study of Oil India Ltd.

Maintenance can be defined as the combination of all the technical, administrative and managerial actions during the life cycle of an item intended to retain it in or restore it to a state in which it can perform a required function or combinations of functions which are necessary to provide a given service. Maintenance enables equipment or a system to be in a state in which it can perform its designated functions affectively. For many organizations, maintenance is a necessary evil that adds expenses to an organization while some others view maintenance as way to reduce costs of producing their product or providing their services. Maintenance management is defined as the management of all the assets owned by a production organization, based on maximizing the return on investment in the assets. Maintenance management is the activities of management that determine the maintenance objectives or priorities, strategies and responsibilities. The implementation of maintenance policies are done through the general management principles of planning, scheduling, organizing and controlling to the maintenance function.
