IGNOU PTS-05 Project – Environment and Tourism in Delhi

Environment is not an abstract concern, nor it is just a matter of aesthetics of personal taste our physical nature, our mental health, culture and institutions, Opportunities for fulfillment, our very survival are directly related to, and affected by the environment in which we live. Environmental problems are frequently portrayed as problems of our inability to devise social system, which can foresee and control new technologies. The challenge is too frequently perceived as simply a problem of people needing to invent and adopt more appropriate technologies. The desire for a greater share of resources, which can create problems for environment, is a result of man’s wish to live in greater numbers and at a greater standard of living considerably higher than that enjoyed by his for bearers

Objectives

• Advise the government of union territories with respect to the suitability of any premises or location for carrying on any industry which is likely to pollute a stream or well or cause air pollution
• Lay down standards for treatment of sewage and trade effluents and for emissions from automobiles, industrial plants, and any other polluting sources
• Evolve efficient methods for disposal of sewage and trade effluents on land
• Develop reliable and economically viable methods for treatment of sewage, trade effluents and air pollution control equipment
• Identify any area or areas within union territories as air pollution control area or areas to be notified under the air (Prevention & control of pollution) act ,1981; and Assess the quality of ambient air and water , and inspect wastewater treatment installations ,air pollution control equipment , industrial plants or manufacturing processes to evaluate their performance and to take steps for the prevention, control and abatement of air and water pollution
