The success stories of Amazon, Carrefour, e-Bay, Hennes and Mauritz, IKEA, Toys "R" Us, Wal-Mart, etc., encouraged local corporates and sellers like Future Group, Aditya Birla Group, Reliance, Landmark, Shoppers Stop, etc., to contribute to the Indian Retail story, taking on global retail giants confidently. During the last decade, Indian organized retail has become a national, technology-intensive growth sector, taking customers away from the not-so sophisticated local “Mom and Pop” stores and neighborhood kirana shop-type business entities. This growth is primarily driven by the tech-savvy youngsters and the middle class consumer groups, with their changing life style and a big appetite for buying quality goods, supported by the purchasing power due to increased income.
